Woven from native mountain goat wool and twisted cedar bark, this historically signi cant Chilkat blanket is among the kinds belonging to the peoples of the northwest coast of North America. Made in southeastern Alaska, such robes are highly prized because of their cultural importance as well as the complex weaving technique and beauty. These robes are traditionally worn by chiefs during potlatch ceremonies. This particular robe, also known as a blanket, compares with similar specimens held by the American Museum of Natural History and other major museum collections. It dates from the 1880s. The Chilkat live along the Chilkat River in Alaska.
