THE PAMPLIN COLLECTION: FINE ART
A Formal Gathering
by Alice Barber Stephens (American, 1858-1932). Ste- phens studied under Thomas Eakins and quickly attained leadership in the “New Woman” movement of work- ing and professional women of the late 19th century. She was, perhaps ironically, best recognized for her illustra- tions for Ivory Soap adver- tisements. Her work regu- larly appeared in magazines such as Scribner’s Monthly, Harper’s Weekly, and The Ladies Home Journal. She illustrated books by Nath- aniel Hawthorne, George Eliot, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and, notably, the 1903 edition of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women.
