Best known for his fishing scenes, war convoys, and marine battle scenes, Anton Fischer was born in Germany and came to New York City in 1903. Among his illustrated books were Moby Dick, Twenty-Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, and Treasure Island. He was known for his technical accuracy, as well as the portrayal of men’s emotions.

Mother and Child by Thomas Sully or School of Thomas Sully. Sully (American, 1783-1872) was a British-born painter who had a long and distinguished career in the new United States painting portraits of distinguished American figures. His paintings of John Quincy Adams, America’s sixth president, and the Marquis de Lafayette appear to have brought him to the forefront of his day. His Adams portrait is in the National Gallery of Art.

Rembrandt Peale (1778-1860, American) was the son of Charles Wilson Peale, the esteemed portrait painter and founder of America’s first museum. Rembrandt Peale was a successful painter in France and the United States. He painted portraits of many early national leaders during the 19th century, including one of the finest paintings of Thomas Jefferson. He also created the Baltimore Museum. The Madonna della sedia, copied here by Peale in 1830, is a painting by the Italian Renaissance artist Raphael, dating to ca. 1513-1514 and housed in the Palazzo Pitti collection in Florence. It depicts Mary embracing the child Christ, while the young John the Baptist devoutly watches.

Twachtman was a well-known impressionist and a member of “The Ten,” a group of American painters who banded together to exhibit their work independent of professional arts organizations. His work is held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art as well as several other public and private collections.

Known as a plein air “Boston painter” because so many of his scenes were in that city, Goodwin was little recognized during his lifetime. In the 1970s the Boston Museum of Fine Arts held a solo exhibit of his work, which subsequently began to find a growing appreciation among American museums and collectors.

Oil on canvas, 46 x 35”. Knight studied in America (with Mary Cassatt and Thomas Eakins) and at l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. After painting battle scenes during the Civil War, he returned to France, ultimately being knighted in the Legion of Honor. In 1896 Knight received the Grand Medal of Honor from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.

Tompkins was a well-known and highly regarded painter of landscapes and figures. He studied and worked in Germany before settling in Boston and was considered one of the early American masters of impressionism. The painting shown here is an excellent example of Tompkins’ use of light on a landscape.

After graduation in 1901 from the Pratt Institute in New York, Jane Peterson went on to study oil and watercolor painting at the Art Students League in New York City. Moving to Paris in 1907, she became friends with Gertrude Stein and met Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. Peterson soon distinguished herself as an original and influential American artist. Her work encompasses Impressionism, Art Nouveau, and Fauvism. In 1916 Peterson exhibited work featuring scenes from the Pacific Northwest, which she had painted while traveling with Louis Comfort Tiffany.

Dennis Malone Carter’s 1854 study for a painting of Molly Pitcher at the Battle of Monmouth, a painting that has become an icon of the portrayal of the American Revolution. Molly Pitcher was a nickname given to a woman said to have fought in the American Battle of Monmouth, who is generally believed to have been Mary Ludwig Hays McCauly, wife of an American artilleryman. Molly Pitcher may be a composite image inspired by the actions of a number of real women. The name itself may have originated as a nickname given to women who carried water to men on the battlefield during the war. The Battle of Monmouth took place in New Jersey on June 28, 1778. British generals Henry Clinton and Cornwallis led 10,000 troops against 11,000 Americans, led by generals Washington and Charles Lee. The battle ended in a draw. Carter (American, 1818-1881) specialized in patriotic and battle scenes.
