THE PAMPLIN COLLECTION: NATIVE AMERICAN
Toy horses from the Plateau, possibly Cayuse, ca. 1900. Typically, toys were adorned with material
that was either traded for or captured. Here, hand carved wooden horses are decorated with
Crow or Sioux lance, ca
1870s. The lance was used
for multiple purposes. Two
of the best documented are warfare ceremonial activities. Sometimes the two merged, with a lance being stabbed into the ground just before battle, as a con rmation of pending
strips of tin, hand cut and tacked onto the animals. These specimens are
particularly rare, not only because toys rarely survive in reasonable
condition, but especially because the primary
material is of wood that is now over a
century old.
con ict and a statement of strength. This specimen is made of wood and steel, with the metal being an actual bayonet of the period.
