P. 17
A pair of Haida totem poles. These late 19th century carvings were created for Bishop Farrhout of MacKenzie, Canada, likely as ceremonial gifts. They would also have been created for the growing late 19th century tourism trade. The Haida lived in Northwest British Columbia and southern Alaska. The pole on the left shows a carved bear holding an inverted human head, a killer whale, and other gures. The pole on the right is of a carved bear, two seated gures, and a raven.
