Mongol helmet. The Mongols rose
north of China, and were led by Genghis Khan in the 12th century. The Mongols conquered much of east and central Asia and what is now Russia and the Middle East. Their presence in China, at that time, forced the Chinese to move their capital far to the south to protect their governing system and the members of the Imperial family.
