THE PAMPLIN COLLECTION: MONGOLIAN
A Moghul helmet, from India/ Central Asia, 1500s. The Moghuls ruled from India and descended from the Central Asian Turko-Mongols (modern- day Uzbekistan), who claimed direct descent from both Genghis Khan and Tamerlane. At the height of their power in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, they controlled much of the Indian subcontinent, extending from Bengal in the east to Kabul & Sindh in the west, Kashmir in the north to the Kaveri basin in the south.

The swords and a shield from the late Mongol and early q Moghul periods. Because of the great expanse of their empire (from the Paci c to the Mediterranean), the Mongols in uenced styles and designs for hundreds of
years. They also innovatively incorporated into the shape of their own implements and weaponry the designs of conquered kingdoms, from Persia, Arabia,
Russia, and China. The shield is made predominately of leather and iron.
18th Century cobalt and gold kendi. This specialized vessel has its origins in the shapes of containers made for the ruling class in Persia.
