Thieme was a highly regarded landscape and marine painter and a prominent figure in the Rockport (Maine) School of American regional art. Born and schooled in Europe, he moved to the United States in 1910. Continuing his education in the U.S. and Europe, he traveled widely and settled in Rockport, Maine, where he established the Thieme School of Art. He remained an influential member and teacher in numerous arts organizations in the northeast.
