Athenaeum Portrait of George Washington, by Gilbert Stuart (American, 1755-1828)
One of several of the Athenaeum portraits painted by Gilbert Stuart in 1798, this particular painting was taken to China by Philadelphia trader Capt. John Blight. It was the first painting of Washington to have traveled abroad and the first seen in Asia. Used on glass and export porcelain, the Athenaeum image is known as the “Dollar Bill Portrait.”
